Description

A second family bestiary from the Carthusian monastery of Salvatorberg new Eufurt, Germany. 86 full color illustrations. This bestiary is closely related in design and text to Bibliothèque Municipale de Douai, MS 711.

Alternate shelfmark: Phillipps Ms. 10850.

The Salvatorberg Bestiary, possibly illuminated in Erfurt, is a member of this [Second Family] group, and its text closely follows that of the early-thirteenth-century English Bestiary in Cambridge (Cambridge University Library, Ii.4.26) ... The Salvatorberg cycle also follows the English order, but a number of miniatures are omitted, especially in the section on birds. ... The illustrations of the Salvatorberg Bestiary, however, are not copies of those in the Cambridge manuscript. - [Fletcher]
