in Medieval Bestiaries: New ApproachesBrill, 2025, 74–113
In 1530, an artist known as the Master of François de Rohan illuminated a luxury manuscript that contained a text called La fleur de vertu (The Flower of Virtue), which examines a wide variety of human virtues and vices (Paris, Bibliothèque Nationale de France, fr. 1877) probably created for a member of the French nobility. The text within already had a long history, reaching back into the fourteenth century and having been adapted in several different versions in both manuscript and print, accompanied by an equally varied image tradition mainly isolated to the late fifteenth century printed editions. - [Author]
